You do great work. The pool is in. The plumbing is roughed out. The addition is framed and dried in. But there's one thing left staring everyone in the face: a torn-up, muddy, bare-dirt yard that your client is already asking about.
Whether you're a home builder finishing a new lot, a pool company wrapping up an install, a plumber who just trenched across a backyard, or an excavator who graded a site — disturbed lawns are part of the job. How you handle them determines whether your clients are left happy or left frustrated. Hydroseeding is the fastest, most cost-effective way to put green back on bare ground, and it's a service that smart contractors either offer or subcontract out.
This guide is written specifically for tradespeople and contractors in the Pittsburgh and Westmoreland County area who regularly disturb lawns and need a reliable, professional way to restore them.
The Bottom Line
Hydroseeding covers bare ground fast, controls erosion, and costs a fraction of sod — typically $0.12–$0.20 per square foot vs. $1.00+ for sod. For contractors managing customer satisfaction and project closeouts, adding hydroseeding to your scope (or partnering with us to do it) is an easy win. We also offer temporary irrigation system rentals — we supply and manage the sprinklers, hoses, and timers so establishment is guaranteed, no excuses. Contact TruScape to discuss trade rates and quick-turn scheduling.
Home Builders & General Contractors
A new home build leaves behind compacted subsoil, construction debris, and equipment ruts. The final grade may look smooth, but without topsoil and seed, it's just a muddy liability. Buyers are increasingly savvy — they expect a lawn at closing, or at least a plan for one.
Hydroseeding is the industry standard for new construction lawn establishment because it's fast, scalable, and works on large irregular areas that would be impossibly expensive to sod. A typical new build lot in Westmoreland County can be fully hydroseeded in a single visit — no waiting for pallets of sod, no hand raking dry seed that blows away.
- Cover bare lots quickly before punch-list walkthroughs
- Control erosion to prevent sediment violations during establishment
- Offer lawn establishment as an upgrade line item at closing
- Subcontract to TruScape and stay on your build timeline
Pro tip for builders: Time hydroseeding for mid-August through mid-October for best results in Western PA. However, we offer year-round service — including dormant winter seeding with spring follow-up — so we can work around your certificate of occupancy date.
Pool & Spa Installers
Pool installations are some of the most disruptive projects a residential property will ever see. Excavators dig deep, equipment rolls across the entire yard, and the final backfill often leaves a mix of clay, sand, and disturbed topsoil around the pool's perimeter.
Homeowners who just spent $50,000–$100,000 on a pool want to enjoy it — not stare at a dirt wasteland every time they swim. Offering a hydroseeding package as part of your install (or as a clearly communicated add-on) sets the right expectation and gives clients a complete finished product.
- Hydroseeding handles the irregular shapes around pool decks, equipment pads, and fencing
- Works on slopes where runoff after rain would otherwise erode fresh disturbed soil
- Faster than sod and far less expensive at the square footage typical of pool surrounds
- We can schedule around your project closeout — typically within 1–2 weeks of site ready
Plumbers & Utility Contractors
Trenching for water lines, sewer laterals, gas lines, and underground utilities creates long, narrow disturbed strips through otherwise established lawns. These areas are prone to settling, erosion, and poor grass re-establishment if not handled correctly.
Simply back-filling and leaving it isn't enough. Compacted trench spoil, disturbed soil structure, and stripped topsoil all prevent grass from re-establishing naturally. Homeowners end up with a visible "scar" across their lawn for years.
- Hydroseed the trench line and surrounding disturbed area in one pass
- Mulch fiber in the slurry holds soil in place while seed germinates — critical over fresh trench backfill
- Faster and cleaner than hand-seeding with straw, which blows everywhere and looks terrible
- We can mobilize quickly — ideal for emergency utility work with tight homeowner expectations
Important: For trench restoration, the trench must be fully backfilled, tamped, and at final grade before we hydroseed. We don't do grading — we spray. Coordinate accordingly.
Excavators & Grading Contractors
If you're in the grading business, hydroseeding is a natural upsell at the end of every job. Once you've finished grading and the site is at final elevation, you've already done the hardest part of the lawn prep work. Adding hydroseeding closes out the job with a finished, professional look — and gives you a line item that's nearly all margin.
We work with grading contractors as a preferred subcontractor on a per-project basis. You sell the hydroseeding to your customer, we show up and spray, and you mark up the service. Everyone wins.
- Steep grades and slopes are no problem — hydroseeding actually excels on slopes where sod won't hold and straw blows off
- We can apply BFM (bonded fiber matrix) products for high-erosion applications
- Flexterra and other hydraulic erosion control blankets available for NPDES-compliant sites
- Quick mobilization — we're not waiting on sod delivery windows
HVAC, Electrical, Fence & Other Trades
You don't have to be a major excavator to disturb a lawn. HVAC installs tear up ground around compressor pads and line sets. Electricians trench for underground conduit. Fence installers dig post holes and run equipment around the perimeter. Any time boots and equipment hit an established lawn, you leave a mark.
These are typically smaller disturbed areas — but they're often in the most visible parts of a property. A small hydroseeding visit can cover a spot repair in a matter of minutes and leave the homeowner with a professional finish rather than a patch of bare dirt.
- Minimum service areas apply — spot repairs under 1,000 sq ft may be quoted as a flat rate
- Ideal for AC pad surrounds, generator installations, and fence line damage
- Can be bundled with a neighbor's project or other nearby work to reduce mobilization cost
Why Hydroseeding Beats the Alternatives
When a contractor disturbs a lawn, there are really only three restoration options: sod, dry seeding with straw, or hydroseeding. Here's how they compare:
| Factor | Sod | Dry Seed + Straw | Hydroseeding |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical Cost (installed) | $1.00–$1.50/sq ft | $0.10–$0.15/sq ft | $0.12–$0.20/sq ft |
| Works on slopes | Limited | Poor | Excellent |
| Irregular shapes | Difficult | OK | No problem |
| Erosion control | Good (immediate) | Poor | Excellent |
| Germination time | Immediate (roots in 2–3 wks) | 14–21 days | 7–14 days |
| Mess / straw blowoff | None | High | None |
For most contractor lawn repair situations, hydroseeding is the clear winner. Sod costs too much at the scale most disturbed areas require. Dry seed with straw blows away, looks unprofessional, and gives homeowners something to complain about. Hydroseeding gives you a clean, green, professional result at a price that fits in a project budget.
Don't want to leave watering up to chance? TruScape offers temporary irrigation system rentals for newly hydroseeded sites. We supply and set up the sprinklers, hoses, and timers — and manage the whole system through the critical germination window. The homeowner doesn't have to remember to water, and you don't get a callback two weeks later wondering why nothing came up.
What We Need From You Before We Show Up
Hydroseeding is the final step — but we can do as much or as little of the prep as you need. We offer final grading and seed bed preparation if your crew doesn't want to deal with it, or we can show up and just spray if you've already handled prep. Either way, we can't spray over construction debris, rock, or standing water. Here's what the site needs to look like before we hydroseed:
- Final grade is complete — or let us do it. The area should be at the intended final elevation with no major ruts, depressions, or mounds before we spray. If your crew has it dialed in, great. If not, we can handle final grading and seed bed prep as part of the job.
- Debris is removed. No lumber scraps, concrete chunks, wire, plastic sheeting, or construction waste on the surface. Our hose is not a bulldozer.
- Topsoil is in place (if needed). Hydroseeding establishes faster on topsoil than raw subsoil. If the site is pure clay or compacted construction fill, discuss topdressing before we arrive.
- Access is clear. We need to get our truck to within approximately 300 feet of the spray area. Let us know about gated communities, tight driveways, or restricted access sites in advance.
- Homeowner is prepared to water. The most common reason hydroseeding fails is not the product — it's lack of watering. For contractor jobs, make sure the homeowner understands their watering responsibilities. We can provide a care sheet.
